Is a Juul really that cool?

Updated: May 6, 2019

It's a Saturday night at your local college campus and you just walked into a house party... There are some sights that you are accustomed to seeing, groups of people talking and laughing, red solo cups filled with some type of alcoholic beverage concoction, blaring music, and Juuls.

If you're between the age range of 16-25, chances are you know, have come into contact with, or own one of these. But to our parents' age group, a Juul is most likely something they have never heard of. Since its' first release of 5% nicotine pods, which was only four years ago, the Juul has become widely popular in a short amount of time. Due to the negative connotations and health effects of smoking cigarettes, the use of the e-cigarette has become a widely used alternative by millennials. However, the e-cigarette can be very misleading. Most users are unaware of the fact that one 5% Juul pod contains the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes.

The high levels of nicotine content, and the fact that Juul pods often combine the nicotine concentration with a "nicotine salt" increases the addictive aspect of nicotine, making users more likely to eventually resort to using cigarettes, as well. With the increased use of e-cigarettes and vaping, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been called to introduce increased regulation on these products. The administration decided that they would allow products released before August 2016 to remain on the shelves until 2022, but also work to instill measures to make these products less appealing to young adults.
