Lose Weight, Reduce Body Fat, and Improve Strength
o When thinking of reasons to exercise, most people think it is just a way to lose weight. While participating in exercise can help you lose weight, it is only one of many benefits of exercise. While it can align with some people’s goals to lose weight, this is not the goal of all those participating in exercise. Exercise can help reduce body fat while building muscle. Through exercise, your body can build muscle, which helps you develop a leaner figure with less fat tissue. Eliminating fat and improving muscle tone is not only good for your physical health in improving breathing, ability to move, and lowering risk of ailments, but it is also good for your mental and emotional health in improving your self-esteem.
Lowers Risk of Disease
o Exercise is a great way to reduce blood pressure, which helps to prevent heart disease. Exercise strengthens your muscles and bones, which prevents osteoporosis and improves the aging process. By reducing body fat, exercise lowers the risk of diabetes and, for those with diabetes, exercise helps control this disease. In the same way, exercise can help prevent obesity, which can be a risk factor for other diseases. In addition, exercise can even help improve chronic disease by controlling the symptoms better. Exercise can reduce blood sugar levels and joint pain as well as improve memory and overall well-being.
Decreases Stress and Anxiety
o As you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters called endorphins which work to simultaneously improve mood and diminish the feelings of anxiety and stress. When exercising, it is much easier to clear your mind and focus solely on the task at hand. Exercise provides a way to escape the worries from the day and essentially gives you a break. Exercise allows you to calm yourself and reset.
Improves Mood
o As discussed above, endorphins help improve your mood. After exercise, though it may seem opposite, you actually get a boost of energy. Throughout the day, you will feel more relaxed and focused as you can take on classes, work, activities, and tasks. Exercise can help improve your self-esteem, and so your positivity and mood will also improve.
Sleep Better
o Exercise contributes to a deeper, longer amount of sleep at night. If you have difficulty sleeping, exercise may help to reduce insomnia and restlessness during the night. Quality and length of sleep help improve stress, heart health, and your immune system. With more sleep, you will have more energy the next day.
